Defensive player of the year is one of the highest honors in the NBA and it comes with a lot of pressure. This year, Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart received the most first-team votes for the All-Defensive team. He was joined on the first team by Phoenix Suns guard Mikal Bridges and Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert.
Gobert was voted to the All-Defensive first team for the sixth straight season and his selection is a testament to how good he has been on the defensive end of the floor. He has a reputation for being a great blocker and that’s why he was awarded the DPOY in each of the past three seasons.
The Timberwolves center has a proven track record on that end of the floor and his reputation is well-deserved. He’s a terrific two-way player with an excellent feel for defense, and he has an excellent ability to get up and down the court.

OG Anunoby of the Toronto Raptors has been an outstanding two-way defender for the past few seasons. He’s got excellent defensive positional versatility and he’s an incredible defender in the paint, where he consistently blocks opposing shooters for long stretches of time.
Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors is another excellent defender, and has been for quite some time. He’s also very fast and athletic, which makes him a solid defender in the paint.
Nikola Jokic of the Cleveland Cavaliers is also a good defender, and his quickness and strong hands make him a great rim protector. He also has an excellent shot blocking ability and is a tough defender when it comes to chasing down 3-point shooters.
Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers is a big man who has been a fantastic defender throughout his career, and he’s an even better defender this season. He’s been a part of a very good defensive team and has been excellent defending the ball against both wing players and power forwards.
Al Horford of the Celtics is another defender who has been excellent this season. He’s also been a great defender in the paint, and his defensive versatility is an asset for this year’s Celtics team.
Grant Williams of the Celtics is a very good defender and is an excellent passer. He also has a great feel for the game and is an exceptional leader. He’s a good defender in the paint, but he doesn’t have as much experience as some of the other defenders on this list.
Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers is a big man who has been able to play with confidence this season. He’s been a great defender in the paint, but he’s also a very good passer and a great leader. He’s a very good player, but his ability to defend the ball against both wing players and powerforwards is what makes him so good.
